Training

Support your laboratory’s accreditation and your professional development by attending our measurement training courses. Whether you’re looking to deepen your existing skills or branch into a new testing area, we offer a range of practical courses to help you upskill.

MSL typically delivers training annually in August at our Lower Hutt and Auckland locations. If you have at least five people interested, we can also arrange for one of our trainers to come to your site at another time of the year. We’re always keen to hear about your training needs so we can plan courses that best support your organisation.

Our courses are highly recommended by International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ(external link)) for personnel with technical responsibilities in metrology and calibration laboratories operating under ISO/IEC 17025, as well as those seeking accreditation. Alongside expert guidance on making reliable measurements, the workshops equip attendees with the knowledge and tools to correctly calculate measurement uncertainty and report results.

After attending any of our workshops, participants receive a Certificate of Attendance. While this is not an IANZ accreditation, it can be used to support evidence of competency in a specific area when applying for accreditation.

These practical, hands-on workshops present real laboratory situations and demonstrate how to develop techniques and procedures that support continuous improvement. As members of New Zealand’s national metrology institute, our trainers are specialist metrologists  world experts, in fact  and you’ll have the opportunity to learn directly from them. Support doesn’t end when the workshop does; our scientists continue to assist attendees as they apply their new knowledge back in the lab.

Introduction to MSL – Training Module

We've developed an online module to help you understand our role as a national metrology institute.

Our Mission – To accelerate New Zealand’s economic growth and enhance well-being through access to world-class measurement standards and advice.

MSL is New Zealand’s official measurement standards body that underpins regulatory compliance and international trade.

We carry out research to improve the SI and to solve measurement problems in industry and government. We play a key role ensuring international recognition of New Zealand’s National Measurement System, which is essential for New Zealand’s ongoing international trade.
