    May 20 is World Metrology Day, commemorating the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875.  MSL will be celebrating WMD alongside the Metrology Society of Australasia (MSA) at an event in Auckland on Tuesday 23rd May.  Approximately 40 customers and key stakeholders are attending the full day programme which includes a technical presentation, workshop and a trip to the Defence Technology Agency in Devonport.

    MSL Mass & Pressure staff member Greg Reid has just returned from the Rio Paralympics where he represented New Zealand in the Shooting. Greg did us proud qualifying for the final of the 10m Prone Air Rifle and finished a very respectable 7th place.

    Callaghan Innovation CE Mary Quin has appointed Eleanor Howick as Chief Metrologist effective 1 August 2016.  Eleanor Howick is a Principal Research Scientist and Leader of the Length Standards Section at MSL where she has been working since 1991.

    Dr Fleur Francois commences as Director of MSL replacing Tim Armstrong on Monday 2nd May.  Fleur previously held the role of Manager Policy and Planning for Callaghan Innovation and brings a fresh and energetic approach to the way MSL functions now and into the future. Fleur has a very experienced management and science background that will keep MSL in good hands. Tim Armstrong is stepping aside from the Director role to concentrate on the Chief Metrologist role.

    The 20th of May is the date in 1875 when the metre convention was signed by 17 nations.  Metre convention has now been signed by 55 nations (including New Zealand) who are full members of the metre convention as well as another 44 nations and economies who are associative members.

    The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) has announced that on 30 June 2015 at 23:59:60 Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) a leap second will be inserted into UTC. In New Zealand, the leap second will occur in at noon on the 1st July 2015.
